Living Lab · Montes de Oro, Costa Rica

Where the forest and technology work together.

We are ODBT, a Costa Rican company in the mountains of Montes de Oro. We look after our forest and measure it with digital tools, share what we learn, and train the people who will care for tomorrow's ecosystems.

  • Secondary forest in regeneration · 2,510 m²
  • Solar energy since 2019

Our direction

Where we are going

  1. 2027

    ECO-MONITOR under way

A European cooperation project to train environmental monitoring technicians in Latin America, coordinated by Politeknika Txorierri.

  2. 2028

    A recognised programme

Our training programme accredited by INA, Costa Rica's National Training Institute.

  3. 2030

    A regional institute

Living Labs in two countries, sharing one method and open data.

These are goals, not results. We will report our progress openly.

Our goal is to become a bridge between Europe and Latin America: a cooperation hub where local strategies align with European Union projects, creating real impact for people and ecosystems.

Wladyslaw Labuda, founder and CEO

The people behind ODBT

We are a small team rooted in Tajo Alto: four people, three of them women, who run the site every day. Our founder trained as a forestry technician in Poland, studied international relations and now also coordinates the International Relations Commission of the Tajo Alto Integral Development Association.

Living Lab Tajo Alto

Our forest is our laboratory

On 4,810 m², more than half of it forest, we measure what happens every day: energy, water, waste, connectivity and visitors. We publish each figure with where it comes from, so anyone can check it.

How we measure

  • Weakest-link rule. A composite indicator inherits the lowest provenance of its parts, never the highest. Billed kWh divided by measured nights is published as billed.
  • Reproducible. The occupancy denominator is recalculated from the raw booking-system export with a script delivered with the data. You do not have to believe the figure; you can reproduce it.
  • Cross-checked. Twelve electricity receipts parsed twice, independently, match to the colón.
  • Standards. Aligned with UN Tourism's SF-MST framework (2024) and the 11 core areas of INSTO; provenance mappable to W3C PROV-O, catalogue in DCAT 3, FAIR principle R1.2.

Instruments and systems in use

  • Two Starlink satellite antennas; the Starlink Mini is read through its local API every 10 minutes (one sample per second) and replicated to a cloud database.
  • ICE electricity meters and a 2.96 kWp photovoltaic system; induction cooking and photovoltaic water heating.
  • Hotel PMS, CRM and an orchestration layer of 44 workflows (37 active) connected by API.
  • Lia, our AI service agent in production: 30,000+ messages answered with a 22-second mean reply time; it quotes, reads payment receipts and creates bookings without human intervention.
  • A drone for aerial imagery of the site and its forest.

Open data

Live data: the connectivity series updates every 10 minutes in our database; it has gaps until the logger moves from a laptop to a fixed machine on site. A public live feed is in preparation.

Training

A new profession for the forest

Being designed

Together with European vocational training partners, we are designing the profile of the digital environmental monitoring technician: someone who looks after forests and water with sensors, connectivity and data. Tourism is one of its career paths.

  • Learning on a real site

Students work with the forest and the data of a site in operation, not with a simulation.

  • Work placements

We offer our site for the 320-hour work placement that Costa Rica's technical secondary diplomas require.

  • Training for trainers

Teaching teams can stay on site for courses of several days.

See the details: partners and how it works
  • Coordination. Politeknika Txorierri, a vocational training centre in the Basque Country (Spain), coordinates the ECO-MONITOR proposal for the Erasmus+ Capacity Building in Vocational Education and Training (CB-VET) call for Latin America.
  • Placements. The 320-hour practice module is part of the secondary technical diplomas of Costa Rica's Ministry of Public Education (MEP).
  • Group size. The meeting room, with capacity for approximately 100 people, hosts full teaching teams and multi-day courses.
  • Teaching material. The 12-month baseline, its receipts and the connectivity series.
